Our Fees

At Red Bar Law, we believe in providing clear and transparent information about legal costs from the outset. Every case is different, and costs depend upon the complexity of the matter, the work required and the specialist expertise needed.

Wherever possible, we offer fixed fees for defined stages of work. Where work is charged on an hourly basis, our current hourly rate is £300 plus VAT at 20% (£360 including VAT).

We explain the anticipated costs, the work included and any additional expenses before instructions are confirmed and keep clients informed of material changes.

We do not offer Legal Aid-funded services or No Win No Fee arrangements.

Initial Telephone Consultation – £300 plus VAT (£360 including VAT)

An initial telephone consultation provides an opportunity to outline your matter, identify the principal issues and discuss possible next steps. The scope of any further advice or representation and its fees will be confirmed separately before work begins.

Our pricing for bringing and defending claims

  • Simple case: £3,500–£7,500 plus VAT (£4,200–£9,000 including VAT).
  • Medium complexity: £7,500–£16,500 plus VAT (£9,000–£19,800 including VAT).
  • High complexity: £16,500–£50,000 plus VAT (£19,800–£60,000 including VAT).

Factors that could make a case more complex:

  • If it is necessary to make or defend applications to amend claims or to provide further information about an existing claim
  • Defending claims that are brought by litigants in person
  • Making or defending a costs application
  • Complex preliminary issues in cases such as unfair dismissal, such as whether the claimant is disabled (if this is not agreed by the parties)
  • The number of witnesses and documents
  • If it is an automatic unfair dismissal claim e.g. if you are dismissed after blowing the whistle on your employer
  • Allegations of discrimination which are linked to the dismissal

There will be an additional charge for attending a Tribunal Hearing of £1,500 per day (excluding VAT, charged at 20%).

Disbursements

Disbursements are costs related to your matter that are payable to third parties, such as the Court and barrister’s fees. We handle the payment of the disbursements on your behalf to ensure a smoother process.

Counsel's fees estimated between £1,250 to £3,000 per day plus VAT, charged at 20% (depending on experience of the advocate) for attending a Tribunal Hearing (including preparation). Counsel's fees for other case matter vary from £1,250 to £12,000 per day plus VAT charged at 20%.

Key stages

The fees set out above cover all of the work in relation to the following key stages of a claim:

  • Taking your initial instructions, reviewing the papers and advising you on merits and likely compensation (this is likely to be revisited throughout the matter and subject to change)
  • Entering into pre-claim conciliation where this is mandatory to explore whether a settlement can be reached;
  • Preparing claim or response
  • Reviewing and advising on claim or response from other party
  • Exploring settlement and negotiating settlement throughout the process
  • Preparing or considering a schedule of loss
  • Preparing for (and attending) a Preliminary Hearing
  • Exchanging documents with the other party and agreeing a bundle of documents
  • Taking witness statements, drafting statements and agreeing their content with witnesses
  • Preparing bundle of documents
  • Reviewing and advising on the other party's witness statements
  • Agreeing a list of issues, a chronology and/or cast list
  • Preparation and attendance at Final Hearing, including instructions to Counsel

The stages set out above are an indication and if some of stages above are not required, the fee will be reduced. You may wish to handle the claim yourself and only have our advice in relation to some of the stages. This can also be arranged on your individual needs.

How long will my matter take?

Timescales depend on the complexity and progress of the case, whether settlement is reached and the Tribunal’s availability. We will provide an indicative timetable and update it as the matter progresses. We cannot control Tribunal listing dates.

If you instruct us to deal with additional matters outside of any work that has been quoted for, then the costs of any such work will be provided to you at the time you provide us with your instructions, and before we proceed with the work. We will always quote you and take your full instructions to proceed with the required work, prior to proceeding. In any event, we will update you on the cost of your matter at regular intervals.

Our charges are plus VAT at 20%, and this is clearly outlined in our invoices. Disbursements that your matter may incur, could include any Court fees that may become payable and are payable in addition to our costs.

The expected timescales of each stage of your matter will be discussed with you, but it should be noted that we cannot dictate the timetable of any Court or Tribunal, where you matter may be listed to be heard.

As we understand that you may not yet know how much assistance you are likely to need, call us now on 020 7129 1424 to find out more.
